Rafael Nadal has announced that he and Roger Federer would be coming together to donate AU$250,000 Australian dollars to the cause. A host of tennis stars have donated to help the fight including Maria Sharapova, Novak Djokovic and Ashleigh Barty.
Serena Williams donated her entire prize money from winning the ASB Classic in Auckland and the ATP announced an AU$725,000 donation from ATP players towards the WWF’s Australian Wildlife and Nature Recovery Fund.
On Wednesday night in Melbourne, players from the ATP and WTA played in a ‘Rally for Relief’ exhibition on Rod Laver Arena.
And Nadal took the opportunity to reveal he and Federer would be making a sizeable contribution.
“I was talking with Roger a couple of hours ago and we decided to give $250,000 Australian dollars to the bushfire relief,” he said.
“Hopefully that will keep inspiring the people to support this terrible disaster that we’re going through.
“And helps to recover all the things that they need.”
Federer and Nick Kyrgios then played a one-set singles match but in a warm-up game, they raised $35,000 together.
Earlier in the day, Federer and Nadal were criticised by Australian Open qualifier Brayden Schnur for not using their influence to speak up about the poor weather conditions at the tournament.
